[Summary]As its name suggests, a mist eliminator is a device specifically designed to remove water mist. In China, numerous enterprises manufacture and sell mist eliminators. These devices feature standardized specifications and offer excellent value for money. As an industrial flue gas treatment equipment used for desulfurization, the primary criteria currently used to evaluate the performance of mist eliminators are the concentration and diameter of mist droplets in the flue gas after passing through the eliminator. Moreover, many factors influence the performance of mist eliminators, including flue gas velocity, uniformity of gas flow distribution, blade structure, spacing between blades, and the arrangement pattern of the mist eliminator itself.

As its name suggests, a mist eliminator is a device specifically designed to remove water mist.

Generally, the performance requirement for mist eliminators is that the average mist droplet concentration passing through the eliminator should be below 75 mg/Nm³ over a given period, with droplets larger than 15 μm being considered as dry flue gas. The sampling location should be within 1–2 meters of the mist eliminator.

The demisting efficiency of the demister continuously improves as the airflow rate increases. This is mainly because, as the airflow velocity rises, the force acting on the water droplets also becomes significantly greater. Consequently, the rate at which gas and liquid are separated accelerates. On the other hand, once the airflow velocity increases, it also leads to a corresponding increase in drag, thereby greatly boosting energy consumption.

The reason why demisters are so effective is that they’re made from specialized materials—such as metal wires and engineering plastics. The mesh of these wires is woven using a highly unique method. Afterwards, molds are used to press the woven mesh into wavy shapes, and these meshes are then fabricated into a wide variety of different sizes and configurations. In many parts of the world, numerous manufacturers produce a broad range of such products tailored for various industries. The key features of this mesh include significantly reduced pressure drop, a much larger actual surface area compared to its apparent surface area, and exceptional efficiency in removing mist.

Material Selection

Typical materials used for demisters include high-performance polypropylene (PPH), polysulfone, FRP, and various grades of stainless steel; among these, PPH material accounts for the majority.

As a type of PP material, PPH exhibits significantly improved performance after modification. The comparison is as follows:

General polypropylene (PP): Low low-temperature impact strength; no; short service life, prone to aging, and highly flammable.

High-performance polypropylene (PPH):

Long service life—PPH material offers a longer service life and systemic advantages.

Chemical resistance—Among all polypropylene materials, PPH material exhibits the strongest chemical resistance.

Impact Strength—Compared to conventional engineering plastics, PPH material exhibits significantly superior low-temperature impact strength.

Temperature resistance—According to actual application conditions, PPH material exhibits excellent temperature resistance.

Demisters are primarily used in a wide range of fields, bringing tremendous convenience to numerous technical professionals. They find application in advanced processes such as evaporation and distillation in the petroleum industry, the chemical and petrochemical industries, the light industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the refining of steel and gold, aerospace manufacturing, and environmental protection—specifically in gas-liquid separation within machinery and equipment, separation of air from moisture, and separation of oil and gas. The selection criteria for demisters are diverse and mainly depend on their intended use, diameter, and thickness.
